Sawrey Gilpin was an English animal painter. Born in Cumbria, he was the son of a soldier and amateur artist. Apprenticed to the marine painter Samuel Scott, Gilpin specialised in painting horses, which he sometimes added to backgrounds by other artists, including Philip Reinagle, George Barret and J.M.W.
