Baxter was ordained in 1638 and he became a minister at Kidderminster in Worcestershire in 1641. During the civil wars, he served as a chaplain to one of Cromwell's regiments, after which he returned to Kidderminster. After the Restoration in 1660, Baxter settled in London. He had been made a king's chaplain, and was offered the post of Bishop of Hereford, but turned down the offer, an act that ended his ecclesiastical career.
