Strangford was a British diplomat and Tory peer. He entered diplomatic service in Lisbon at age 22 and was quickly promoted to minister-plenipotentiary, with full authority to represent the head of state. In 1808 he went on a successful diplomatic mission to Brazil and was subsequently appointed ambassador to Sweden, and later to Constantinople and Russia. His diplomatic career went into decline after he was caught falsifying dispatches to the British government and revealing confidential documents to the Austrian ambassador in St Petersburg.
