Born in Fiji but raised in Abergavenny, South Wales, Sheers went on to study at New College, Oxford. The winner of an Eric Gregory Award and the 1999 Vogue Talent Contest for Young Writers, his first collection of poetry, The Blue Book was published in 2000. His play, Unicorns, was produced by the Old Vic in 2006, with Joseph Fiennes in the lead role.
