Ironically, this print of the leader of the Parliamentarians and subsequently Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell, is based on Van Dyck's painting Charles I on Horseback with M. De St Antoine (1633, Royal Collection). It is famous for a number of radical alterations that were made to the metal printing plate over time. Lombart originally depicted Oliver Cromwell, but after his death and the collapse of the Commonwealth in 1660, Cromwell's head was polished out and re-engraved as the French king, Louis XIV.... more
