Ironically, this print of the leader of the Parliamentarians and subsequently Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell, is based on Van Dyck's painting Charles I on Horseback with M. De St Antoine (1633, Royal Collection). It is famous for a number of radical alterations that were made to the metal printing plate over time.
