Born on the Isle of Wight, Hadfield was the first priest to be ordained in New Zealand. Teaching himself the Maori language, Hadfield helped settle disputes between the native people and the colonial administrators. A fervent advocate for equality within the colony, he encouraged the natives to vote on issues that concerned them. In 1870 he was appointed Bishop of Wellington, and in 1890 he was elected primate of New Zealand.
