Army medical officer, Noel Godfrey Chavasse, was the only individual to receive a Victoria Cross and Bar during the First World War. He won his first VC during the Battle of the Somme in 1916 when, under heavy enemy fire, he rescued at least twenty wounded men. A Bar was added posthumously for acts of bravery in the summer of 1917 when he, though severely wounded, had refused to leave his post and searched for and attended to the wounded.
