Jamaican-born Lawrence and her former husband came to public attention after their son Stephen's murder in a racially motivated attack in southeast London (1993). They campaigned to bring the killers to justice, publicly criticising police response. A judicial inquiry (1999) concluded that institutional racism contributed to the failure of the police to solve the case.
