Between 1899 and 1930, Ashby wrote regular reports for a variety of newspapers and journals on a series of excavations underway in Rome at the time. In 1902, he enrolled as the first student of the British School at Rome, a centre for archaeological research, and within a year had been appointed as assistant director.
