Sir Benjamin Brodie was a surgeon whose name is applied to certain diseases of the bones and joints. He spent most of his career at St George's Hospital, first as assistant surgeon (1808-22) and then as senior surgeon (1822-40). In 1810, he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society. His most important work was Pathological and Surgical Observations on the Diseases of the Joints (1818), which led to a reduction in the number of amputations that were deemed necessary.
