Weld-Forester became Member of Parliament for Wenlock in 1828, a seat he held for forty-six years. He served in the Earl of Derby's first two Tory administrations, both times as Comptroller of the Household, and was admitted to the Privy Council in 1852. He became Father of the House of Commons in 1873, as the longest serving member of the House. The following year he succeeded his elder brother as third Baron Forester and entered the House of Lords.
