Charles Lennox was one of the many illegitimate children of King Charles II. He converted to Catholicism in 1685, and when Charles's brother James II, also a Catholic, was exiled in 1688, he followed. Soon however Lennox returned to England to support William III For the rest of his career he changed his allegiance and religion to suit his circumstances. His final years saw him descend into drunkenness, but his distinguished birth meant he was still buried in 1723 in Westminster Abbey.
