Holman Hunt entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1844 where he met Millais, who was to become his closest friend. A founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, 1848, and throughout his life an adherent to Pre-Raphaelite principles; his paintings include The Hireling Shepherd, 1852, and The Light of the World, 1854. In the seventies and eighties, Hunt became increasingly isolated artistically, his later work concentrating on religious themes informed by successive visits to the Holy Land.
