Babington studied botany at St John's College, Cambridge. After receiving his MA in 1833, he remained at Cambridge; with no teaching post he was able to devote all of his efforts to his research. By the 1840s, he had become the acknowledged leader of taxonomic research on British higher plants. His Manual of British Botany (1843), which had taken nine years to prepare, was extremely influential and ran into many editions.
