Brought up in India and England, his social conscience was roused by experiences in India and by seeing hunger marches through Oxford as a student in the 1930s. In 1943 was sent to the townships of Sophiatown and Orlando, Johannesburg. Over the next thirteen years, Huddleston actively protested against South Africa's apartheid policies, and his book Naught for your Comfort (1956) became an immediate bestseller.
