studio of Sir Peter Lely

Sir John Harman was one of a breed of captains, who came to be called 'tarpaulins' and who had learnt their skills on the job, rather than by gaining commissions as gentleman officers. Harman served with great distinction in the Dutch wars of 1665-7 and again in 1672-4 where he was seriously wounded on both occasions.
