Studied medicine and was elected to the Royal College of Surgeons in 1828. In 1833, he travelled to Jamaica working as a magistrate to judge disputes between black apprentices and their white masters in the aftermath of the abolition of slavery. He published an account of his experiences (1835). He then spent four years in Cuba as Superintendent of the liberated Africans, and published a number of works on slavery.
