Jerome left school at fourteen and initially worked as a clerk for a railway company, and then as an actor. He gave up the stage in favour of writing and journalism, publishing his first book On the Stage - and Off in 1885. His most famous book Three Men in a Boat, 1889, has remained a popular classic, and has been filmed three times. He wrote several plays and worked as an editor on The Idler and To-Day magazines.
