Journalist; the first editor of Queen illustrated paper; in 1862 Greenwood succeeded Thackeray as editor of the Cornhill Magazine. In 1865, Greenwood joined with the publisher George Smith to found the Pall Mall Gazette which he made an important voice of independent conservatism, especially in foreign affairs. He resigned from the Pall Mall when it was taken over by a radical proprietor in 1880, becoming editor of the newly founded St James's Chronicle.
