At twenty-six Brown was appointed Head of the Westminster School of Art. After spending the winter of 1883-4 studying in Paris, he began to reform the teaching of art, and by the end of the 1880s Westminster was regarded as the most progressive art school in London. He went on to become Slade Professor of Fine Art at University College, London.
