Born in Great Britain, Harris left for America at the age of fourteen. In 1883 he returned to England, where he became the editor of the Evening News, and later the Fortnightly Review. In 1894 he published his first book, Elder Conklin and Other Stories, and bought the Saturday Review, which he made the most brilliant literary and political weekly of the time.
