Painter, printmaker and designer, best known for the compelling realism of his portraits. He learnt painting from his father, Hans Holbein the Elder, and worked in Basle, Switzerland, before moving to England in 1526-28. He returned in 1531/2 and remained here until his death. He depicted some of the most prominent figures at the court of Henry VIII.
