Historian and National Portrait Gallery Trustee (1961-82). Born Leicestershire and educated University College, Leicester and Christ's College, Cambridge, of which he became a Fellow in 1946. He became Professor of Modern English History in the University of Cambridge (1966-1973) and Master of Christ's College (1978-82). Publications include England in the Eighteenth Century(1950) and The Birth of a Consumer Society'(1989).
