Began his working life as a Civil Servant in the famine department and worked for the Government for almost 40 years. Granted an honorary title of 'Rai Bahadur'. Was given a Certificate of Honour at the time of the Imperial Delhi Durbar in 1903. Travelled widely and was present at the Coronation of Edward VII with his kinsman, Maharaja Tagore of Calcutta. Retired from government in 1908 but carried on his work in various non-official capacities.
