Marcus Stone was the son of painter Frank Stone; he was trained by his father and began to exhibit at the Royal Academy before he was eighteen. Within a few years, he had established himself as a successful illustrator, working on books by Charles Dickens, Anthony Trollope and other writers who were friends of his family.
