Canadian-born Gilbert Parker began his career as a teacher in Ontario. After several years travelling he moved to Britain and began writing. His first book, Pierre and his People: Tales of the Far North, was published in 1892. Many novels followed, the most successful of which was The Seats of the Mighty (1896), a story based on the British capture of Quebec. A strong belief in Imperialism led Parker to stand as an MP.
