Originally destined for a naval career, Thesiger left the Navy after becoming heir to his father's West Indian estates. However, a year after moving to St Vincent, a volcano destroyed the estate and impoverished his family. Thesiger proceeded to practise as a barrister in England, joining the home circuit and Surrey sessions, soon becoming the leading counsel.
