Son of the singer James Campbell McInnes and the novelist Angela Thirkell, MacInnes spent his childhood in Australia and a period working in occupied Germany. In London, within Soho's 'two square miles of vice', MacInnes wrote City of Spades (1957), the first in a trilogy of London novels, Absolute Beginners (1959) being his most celebrated.
