Although U.S.- Ethiopian relations were established in 1903 it was not until Ethiopia's liberation from it's Italian occupation that Ethiopia established it's own Legation in Washington on 9 November 1943. Blatta Ephrem Tewolde Medhin was the first Ethiopian Envoy to the United States. The importance of the role was reflected in the official title which in it's entirety was 'Envoy Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to the United States of America'.
