Jowett's name became synonymous with Balliol College, Oxford, which he turned into the leading college in one of Britain's top universities at the height of its world power. Jowett was educated at Balliol where, unusually, he was elected a fellow while still an undergraduate. In 1855 he was appointed to the Regius Professorship of Greek.
