William Webb Follett was called to the Bar in 1824, and joined the western circuit in the following year. When Sir Robert Peel formed his administration in 1834, Follett was appointed solicitor general, and at the same time he was made a king's counsel and received a knighthood. The following year Follett was elected as MP for Exeter. He continued his private practice and was reputed to be the greatest advocate of his generation. In 1844 he was appointed as Attorney General.
