Born into a Coptic Christian family in Egypt. Yacoub studied at Cairo University, qualifying as a doctor (1957). Moving to Britain in 1962, he later became a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon at Harefield Hospital (1973). As a visiting professor, he was amongst a team that performed the first open heart surgery at the University of Nigeria (1974).
