Naval Officer; born in Malta and entered the Royal Navy as a cadet in 1879; rose through the ranks, becoming lieutenant in 1890, commander in 1901 and captain in 1905; in May 1916, after sighting two enemy destroyers approaching his ship, his notifying signal brought the Battle-Cruiser Fleet, and subsequently the whole Grand Fleet, into the battle of Jutland; played a prominent role in the action with a German second scouting group in 1917 and was praised for his efforts; appointed admiral superintendent, Portsmouth Dockyard... more
