Called to the Bar in 1848, Hannen joined the home circuit, where his rise was rapid. He attempted to enter political life in 1865, when he stood as a Liberal candidate, but was defeated; he never tried again. He would in any case have found it difficult to combine a serious political career with the demands of what had become a huge practice, particularly in mercantile and insurance law.
