Composer and teacher, born in Cheltenham to a musical family of Swedish extraction. In 1893 he entered the Royal College of Music where he met Ralph Vaughan Williams, a lifelong friend and musical influence. Holst is best known for the orchestral suite The Planets (completed in 1916 but not performed in full until 1920) is often linked to the war, particularly owing to its ominous, opening movement Mars, the Bringer of War.
