Born in Metz, Germany, Frieda Lawrence came to England with her first husband Ernest Weekley, a university professor based in Nottingham, with whom she had three children. In Nottingham, she met the young writer D. H. Lawrence and in 1912, they eloped, marrying in 1914. Lawrence described Frieda as 'the one possible woman for me, for I must have opposition-something to fight'. The couple travelled extensively together.
