Bridges served with the British Red Cross during the First World War, before training as a nurse and midwife. She worked at St Thomas’s Hospital in London for a decade as a ward sister, home sister and night superintendent. In 1937 a Rockefeller fellowship in nursing took her to the United States and Canada.
