Charles Colling, in collaboration with his brother Robert, was one of the earliest and most successful improvers of the breed of shorthorn cattle. Succeeding to his father's farm at Ketton, Durham, he pursued the breeding system he had learned during a visit in 1783 to the farm of Robert Bakewell, an agricultural who revolutionised sheep and cattle breeding in England by methodical selection.
