Stanley was the leading liberal theologian of his time in England. A pupil at Rugby School, he was tutored and profoundly influenced by the headmaster, Thomas Arnold. When Arnold died in 1842, his widow asked Stanley to act as biographer. The Life and Correspondence of Thomas Arnold, published in 1844, is considered Stanley's greatest work.
