One of the leading botanists of the period, Jackson was Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew from 1841 to 1865. As the Director of Kew Gardens, he was largely responsible for throwing the Gardens open to the public and was succeeded by his son Joseph Dalton Hooker
