Coote served as Commander-in-Chief of the British forces in India during the Seven Years War. His victories against the French at the Battle of Wandiwash (1760) and the Siege of Pondicherry (1761) established Britain's colonial domination in India. His later victory at the Battle of Porto Novo (1781) ensured Britain's military position in southern India under the administration of the Governor-General Warren Hastings.
