Robertson Gladstone was a Liverpool based West India merchant and brother of the future Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone. Robertson had his own political career being Mayor of Liverpool from 1842-1844. He imported sugar from his plantations in then British Guiana and Mauritius until the abolition of slavery, when he used his wealth to invest in the developing railway network across the north of England and Scotland.
