Birket Foster was a famous book illustrator and watercolourist. Shown here in Renaissance dress, only his face is in sharp focus, adding intensity to his direct gaze. Initially trained as a painter, the photographer Wilkie Wynfield made an extensive series of portraits of artists in the early 1860s, which he published in 1864.
