One of a series of pastels of political radicals, this drawing shows Horne Tooke on a sofa wearing a night cap beneath a tent-like canopy topped by the eagle of Zeus and a bust of Athene on the wall beyond. At his feet is the third volume of his The Diversions of Purley (the first two volumes were published in 1786 and 1805) indicating his expertise in the study of languages.
