In 1862 Clodd became a clerk at the London Joint Stock Bank, where he remained until 1915, when he was seventy-five. Largely a self-taught man, from his early days in London Clodd attended the Birkbeck Institute, read assiduously in the free libraries, and heard lectures. He published his first book, The Childhood of the World, in 1873. Written as a primer on evolutionary anthropology, it introduced children to the latest information on prehistoric man.
