Taking inspiration from the corsage detail in Giovanni Boldini's painting of Lady Colin Campbell, this scarf was designed exclusively for the National Portrait Gallery by Amet & Ladoue.

Gertrude Elizabeth Campbell was a journalist, art critic, socialite and keen sportswoman. She separated from her husband Colin, Lord Campbell after a notorious court case in 1886. In 1895, she re-established her standing in society as art critic of The World and the Art Journal and editor of the Ladies Field which reflected her interests in both art and sport.

More about this portrait: Gertrude Elizabeth (née Blood), Lady Colin Campbell by Giovanni Boldini.
Oil on canvas, 1894.

In this magnificent life-size portrait, Italian painter Giovanni Boldini pays special attention to Campbell's black satin evening dress and the way it clings to her body. The elongated lines of her anatomy are reminiscent of both the sinuous contours of the contemporary Art Nouveau aesthetic, and elegantly exaggerated fashion drawings.
