Gary Stewart Hume (English, b. 1962) currently lives and works in both London, England and Accord, New York. Hume earned his Masters in Fine Arts from Goldsmiths in 1988, and his work is closely linked with other YBA artists of the same generation. Known for his brightly-colored, high-gloss paintings, Hume’s work is marked by the use of bold shapes, flat planes of color, and reflective surfaces. Simultaneously abstract and figurative, Hume reduces an image’s to its most basic form and coloring. In 1996, Hume was nominated for the Turner Prize. He represented Great Britain in the 1999 Venice Biennale and was elected a Royal Academician in 2001.
