Our historic staircase is based on examples found in Italian renaissance palaces. Designed for its architectural beauty and a gentle climb, the stairs are tunnel vaulted with entrances marked by rounded arches. The top of the central flight has columns adorned with lions, eagles and rams. It is a fitting place to show sculpture and currently displays funerary effigies representing kings and queens of England from 1216 to 1519.
Take a step into the future with us and name one of the steps in the central flight of this remarkable staircase.
